As the New Year Approaches...

Wishing you all a beautiful beginning to the new year... as the old year comes to a close, I reflect on all of the things it brought my way... some good, some not so good... but I will remember the positive things... and put the not so good to sleep... as always, I will thank God for the many blessings He has given me, my loving family, and my family who has gone before me who are always at my side and in my heart... their love will never fade...

As I gaze once more upon the beautiful cognac bottle that was a gift to my daddy from France in WWII, I am reminded of those who have fought and continue to fight to keep us strong and free... to them I am eternally grateful... I shall pray for their safe return in the coming year... and to all of you, my most heartfelt wishes for a blessed New Year... Cheers!... xoxo

Do You Believe in Flower~Fairies ?...

Silly me, of course you do... or you would not have arrived here at Idyllhours... where fairy wings and daydreams and butterfly kisses fill the air... did you know that every time a new story is told, a fairy is born? It is so... I believe... it is also said that those who truly believe, with all their heart, will be given little gifts from the flower~fairies at times... a little enchanted token of some sort to thank you for believing in them...

Yesterday, as Jack and I started on our daily Nature walk, I was certain I saw something flitting about in my garden... could it be?... was it really and truly a flower~fairy?... flower~fairies are quite elusive even on the warmest of summers eves, and even more so in the cold winter months... I blinked and just as quick whatever I had seen move had vanished... poof!... but there, under a blanket of snow covering my garden, I saw the most beautiful purple flower... but it is December I thought to myself... and it is cold and my precious plants are asleep for the long winter... I gingerly reached down, and there it was... a beautiful bloom on my Speedwell... the very deepest purple... then another... and another... I carefully picked each and every lovely bloom... pondering how this could possibly be?... then I remembered what is told down through the years... that those who truly believe in the flower~fairies will indeed be given a gift... I am certain the flower~fairies know how much I love them... I even wrote a very special poem for them here last summer... they know...

What a delightfully enchanting gift they left for me... they know I am anxiously awaiting Spring, and all of the beautiful treasures it brings... they too are dreaming about Springtime and fairy dances in the moonlight on warmer April eves...I shall place these precious gifts in my flower~press... to preserve them for all time... and yes, I shall begin a Flower~fairy journal... I so love to write about the flower~fairies... and perhaps place one of my beautiful purple Speedwell in the journal to remind me of my priceless gift... and, as always... I shall believe... do you? ... xoxo

A Promise of Spring...

Just as I simply cannot wait to decorate our home for Christmas, once it is over, I am just as eager to put everything away... and my thoughts turn to Spring... I am not a winter person... although the snow~covered countryside that surrounds our home in my little rural town is truly beautiful, I long for the warmth of the sun on my face, walking barefoot once more through tall, cool grass...eagerly awaiting that first little sign of my daffodils peeping through the ground after a long winter's nap... are you like me?... do your thoughts turn to Spring as well... and all of the beauty it has to offer?...
Today, elves and Santas will make way for little birdnests with teeny little speckled eggs inside...

Vintage ornaments will be gingerly packed away, along with miniature villages and trees... candy canes will be replaced with pastel~colored mints... I am already longing to sit on my back deck, with my comfy rose~covered quilt and pillow... a stack of gardening magazines at my side... the sound of birdsong filling the air... I miss my little Hummingbirds and pray they are doing okay so very far away in South America for the winter... I think about how excited I am when sometime in late April I call out to Jack... "they're here" when our first precious little winged jewel arrives...I wait in eager anticipation for the first seed catalogs to arrive in my mailbox... to me, this is such a long awaited pleasure... I spend hours upon hours pouring over each one... shall I plant one of those?... and perhaps three of four of those?... I am such an avid gardener, a passion that was a gift to me from my mama, my grandmother and my great~grandmother... all of whom had the most beautiful cottage gardens one would ever hope to see... if I had to choose one thing that stirs my soul the very most, it is gardening... and Nature... okay, that's two things... but they go hand~in~hand... so today, after putting all of the decorations away, I shall make myself a cup of tea in my favorite vintage violets teacup...

and sit down with my garden journal... I will browse through it slowly... remembering through my little sketches where each and every plant is and how elated I am when I see their first teeny shoots in the Spring... I will make my "wish~list" for new flowers and plants I want to put in this year... I will dream about my container plantings and decide just which ones are my favorites (which is very hard for me... they are ALL my favorites)... soon, our little garden center down the lane will display beautiful pots of primrose and pansies out front... as they begin working full~time in their greenhouses... planting tiny seedlings in peat pots... I can while away an entire day at that little nursery... savoring the warmth of the sun and the smell of moist potting soil... my pleasures are simple ones... these are the things that delight my senses and make me feel alive!...I gaze at my photos from last Spring of my beautiful fairy rose... so soft and sweet... and what a perfect name for such a perfect creation... my little flower fairies will take their place once more about my home today where the elves and santas stood these past weeks...Do you too dream of Spring like I do?... if so, happy thoughts to you... now, I am off to settle down with my Lady Grey tea... garden journal and pencil in hand... and let my cares melt away and my thoughts carry me away to a warm Spring day... xoxo

Just a Small~town Blog....

Christmas is almost here... and I wanted to take the time today to say "thank~you" to so many of you ladies who have visited me here at Idyllhours over the past year... your visits and comments mean so very much to me... mine is just a simple, ordinary, every~day kind of blog... I post about whatever is in my heart that particular day... I am not rich or famous, I don't live in an extra big fancy house or own an exquisite shop...infact, some days I wonder where I fit into this place called Blogland... or do I?... the one thing I do know, is that if I only had one follower, who left one comment, but I made that one person smile...or brought back one precious memory for them... then I am content... I don't ever want to feel like I am competing in this land of blogs... that's just not me... I guess it is only natural to reflect at this time of year about the things that really matter to us and what is most important in life...faith, family, friends, and all God's precious little creatures top my list...

So to you dear friends, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas... and yes, that too comes straight from my heart... xoxo

Vintage Christmas Friday...Santas, elves and angels...

Hello, and welcome to my Vintage Christmas Friday post, a little early, as, like all of you ladies, I have much to do this week... but I didn't want to miss Debra's party at Common Ground!... I have had my post ready to go, all about my vintage elves, santas and angels... then something beautifully magical happened... last year, I posted about a wonderful estate sale I went to... the kind you dream of, where there are wonderful treasures everywhere you look, and everything is next to nothing in price... and no one else was even looking at the things I was... I really thought I was dreaming... anyway, I came across two pair of vintage ice skates... they were 25 cents a pair, can you believe it???... So I snatched them up and sent them to my dear friend Celeste of Celestina Marie Designs... Celeste is a beautiful painter and I had seen some of the gorgeous vintage ice skates she had done in the past... and thought she might be able to use them... one pair was the teeniest ones I have ever seen... and the other pair was a ladies pair... Celeste painted the teeny ones in her trademark pink roses and fufu'd them all up... they now live in her beautiful guest bedroom... yesterday, a box arrived for ME and inside... oooh, I could hardly believe my eyes!... Celeste had painted the ladies pair for me, with the most stunning winter scene... she knows I LOVE barns, and painted these treasures to thank me for sending her the skates... I love finding special little treasures for my blogging friends at estate sales, then surprising them with things they collect or craft with...I have displayed my stunning skates underneath our woodland~Nature decorated tree...

She had learned from an antiques dealer friend of hers that these are from the 40's... my very favorite era!... making them even more special to me... her inspiration for this design came from a favorite painter of hers named Debbie Toews who she had studied under... sadly, Debbie has now passed away, but Celeste thought this was a beautiful way to honor her dear friend Debbie as well... Debbie... I hope you are looking down and seeing these beautiful skates and knowing your love and inspiration was so appreciated by Celeste, and now by me also... I thought this beautiful treasured gift would be perfect to start out my vintage Christmas post with today... thank you so very much dear Celeste!...
Our home is filled this time of year with Santa and his helpers... c'mon!... I'll introduce you to some of them... Santa in the front is one of my vintage Annalee Dolls from the early 1960's... Mr. and Mrs. Santa and the babies are from the early 1950's...Some of the elves love to get together for a little break from all the hustle and bustle of the holidays in one of my mudrooms... I tell you... these guys are everywhere in here!..."Made in Japan" puts these cuties 1941 or prior...

Annalee Dolls Santa from the '60's... I love to collect vintage Annalees... originally they were handmade only in Meredith, New Hampshire... today, they are still being made, however the new ones are now made in China... so sad no longer made in the good old US of A... the new ones are adorable too though, and I also collect those... all Annalees in this post however are my vintage ones...
I think this guy has been into the spiked eggnog a bit too much already!...

Nope, not the same elves as above... this one is wearing a green hat!...I think his sweetie is the sister of the elf in the other photo... they look alot alike!...
Love, love love Holt Howard collectibles, especially Christmas ones... my sister Jill gave me these darling little Holt Howard elves last year for Christmas...aren't they precious!...She also gave me this beautiful little angel bell... c. 1950...Mr. and Mrs. Santa (Annalees) from a wonderful estate sale many years ago... these are from the '60's...What adorable faces!...Sooo many kneehuggers... they sit in the tree, under the tree... all over the place!...
My most favorite vintage Annallee of all is my little reindeer from the early '60's... he is begging Santa for a treat as Mrs. Claus gives Santa a much deserved backrub... (also vintage Annalees from the early 60's)...
Thanks so much for visiting with me here today... I love decorating for Christmas, especially with all of my vintage decorations... and I love sharing them with you!... I hope you will all visit Debra at Common Ground for all of the wonderful vintage Christmas posts... I will link up to her post tomorrow, and visit everyone else too!... xoxo
