I was country... when country wasn't cool...

I swear, everywhere you look these days, someone is telling you the latest "trend", "fad", "what's in"... "what's out"... "don't wear this"... "do wear that"... I guess you could describe ME as "eclectic"... I have always loved alot of different colors and looks... now I am reading that the "newest" trend is the color "turquoise"... and that the Prairie~western look is in... many of us have ALWAYS loved the color turquoise and the "Prairie~western" look... it reminds me of one of my all~time favorite Barbara Mandrell songs...

"I remember wearin' straight leg Levis an' flannel shirts even when they weren't in style...

I remember singin' with Roy Rogers at the movies...

When the West was really wild...

An I was listenin' to the Opry...

When all of my friends were diggin' rock'n'roll an' rhythm and blues... I was country, when country wasn't cool...

I remember circlin' the drive~in...

Pullin' up and turnin' down...George Jones...

I remember when no one was lookin', I was puttin' peanuts in my Coke...

I took alot of kiddin', cause I never did fit in... now look at everybody tryin' to be what I was then... I was country... when country wasn't cool...

I was country, when country wasn't cool... I was country... from my hat down to my boots... I still act and look the same... what you see ain't nothin' new... I was country... when country wasn't cool"...

On a side~note, my daddy grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico and worked and lived in several other towns as well before joining the Army... (my grandparents always lived in Santa Fe in the little house I remember sooo well)... he bowled with Roy Rogers on a team in Roswell, New Mexico... they were called "The Busy Bees"... back then he sang in local bars and he hadn't chosen the name Roy Rogers yet... his real name is Leonard Slye... no brag... just fact... so, Roy Rogers was more than a western hero to our family... he was my daddy's friend... what have YOU always loved and worn or collected and then suddenly it became "cool"???... I would love to hear!... xoxo

Great post, Julie Marie. I always love looking at your vintage collection. My husband has always loved turquoise and Indian jewelry...before it was cool. And how cool is it that your father was friends with Roy, I mean Leonard!

You always bring back memories, Julie!!

My aunt's husband (family) used to own a jewelery store in Bernalillo, NM and when I would go back and visit my mom I would always come home with such fabUlous turquoise jewelry. But as you know it was stolen. And I gave my nieces and nephew my mother's rings. She always wore turquoise jewelry!

I'm a little bit county and a little bit rock and roll **wink**

Wonderful post!!

I love these trips of nostaliga. I was always a country girl myself. I still have a set of my favorite black cowboy boots I wore forever. My first wedding ring (from my 1st husband) is turquiose and cinnabar and mother of pearl. I LOVED that type jewelery...my first husband is American Indian and it probably attracted me a little because I could wear my boots and jewelery.LOL
You are such a jewel sweetie, I love that you are you see and I love that you have so many facets.
Hugz to you

I always love seeing what you come up with!!

Love your collection of cowboy stuff.

I just bought my first pair of cowboy boots this last summer in Montana. They are red.

I think I will put them on today and "strut my stuff".

Blessings,

Jo

I've always loved Roy Rogers and his singing, but mostly loved him because he had Trigger. What a fun post Julie Marie.

I read somewhere yesterday that SILVER was in and GOLD was out.

Who laid down the law that says something is in OR out of vogue?

Life is too short to do what makes someone else happy.

I love being a 'rule breaker'. Makes me feel ALIVE!

Hi Julie marie,
To answer your question, I've always loved collecting "junk" before it was a trend.

Hi pretty Ana, I would love to see a picture of you in your "weddin'" boots! Yes, peanuts in my Coke, gave it a real fizz and was supposed to give you a "buzz"... (we pretended it did anyway... tee hee hee... it's an old Southern tradition!)

Hi Sweet Friend!

I really enjoyed this post Julie, when I was a young girl turquoise jewelry was all the rage and I still have my bracelet that took months of convincing before my mom got it for me!

I love cowboy boots, jeans, flannel shirts and I'm really a country girl stuck in the city...sigh. I loved seeing all of your photos and your lunch box is fabulous!

My mom is from the south and she used to put peanuts in her coke...what a hoot, until you I hadn't heard of anyone that did that.

Love you sweet friend!

Hi, Julie Marie,
Well, you know I have already told you I am a typical Texas gal (big hair, big earrings and bright red lipstick). My parents listened to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys and would do a little Texas two step right in our living room! So, I guess I have always been country, too! Loved your post, sweet friend! Hi Julie Marie I think for me in the Seventies and Eighties when I really began painting everyone wanted and loved pop art and modern art I just coulnt do it I always painted the way I do now and back then people were not interested. Romantic Victorian art and traditional painting has been comming back in the last decade. Cool post, Im wondering what peanuts will taste like in pop now I am going to have to try it. Sincerely, Jonny

Darling Lady JM, this is another nostalgic post and the reason why I love popping in at Idyllhours. My grandma was a big fan of US country western songs and new many by heart. Her favourite one was called” They took her away” I am not certain who sang it, but often she would walk about her cottage and sing this song. Great memories you brought back, thanks darling. Have a marvelous weekend darling.

Hello Julie Marie! I loved wearing copper jewelry ever since we lived in Arizona. Silver too. I saw Barbara Mandrell in El Paso (still have an autographed photo), and my dad saw her when she use to play in the NCO clubs on base. I remember drive in movies, and I always thought peanuts in coke was a southern thing. I guess you could say I always did my own thing regardless. No wonder my granddaddy called me little miss independence!
